How Much Space Do You Need for a Home Gym?
Somewhere between 96 sq ft and 505 sq ft, depending on what goes in it. These five setups, smallest first:
- Bike and stretching mat96 sq ft
- Squat stand, bench and plates198 sq ft
- Power rack, bench, plates and dumbbells279 sq ft
- The rack setup plus a treadmill367 sq ft
- The rack setup, treadmill, cable trainer and mat505 sq ft
Each figure is the equipment plus the floor around it that you need to use it: room to step back from a rack, to get on and off a treadmill, to lie on a bench.
What fits in which room
Floor left over after each setup, or “Too small” where the room has less floor than the setup needs.

Why a real room can hold more than this
These figures count each piece's clearance on its own, the way a commercial floor has to. At home they overlap: the bench usually works inside the rack's clearance, and the space you step back into from the dumbbells can be the same space you step back into from the rack. So a setup marked “Too small” by a small margin may still work in a room with the right shape.
The reverse is true too. Area is not shape: a garage door, a water heater or a sloped ceiling over half the room can rule out a setup that the area says will fit. Ceiling height matters for a rack and for overhead pressing, and none of the figures here account for it.

Measure the room, draw it in Spatium, and place the real equipment at its real size. You will see the clearance overlap, and whether it fits, before anything is delivered.
