How Much Space Do You Need to Open a Gym?

A 10 piece starter gym needs 750 sq ft of floor space. That is the equipment itself plus the clearance each piece needs to be used safely, and nothing else.

A fully equipped floor is a different question. The 4,478 sq ft gym below holds 58 pieces, and the equipment itself covers only 24% of it. Most of a gym is the space around the machines.

What is left over has to cover walkways between machines, reception, changing, storage and anything else that is not equipment. This page does not estimate how much of it you will need, because that depends on your floor, and it does not claim a number of machines will fit: whether they do depends on the shape of the room, not only its area.

What a fully equipped gym floor uses

This is the layout on the Spatium homepage and in the demo: a 4,478 sq ft room with cardio, machines, free weights, a functional area, stretching and a front desk. Every figure is computed from that layout and the catalog dimensions.

Pieces of equipment
58
Floor the equipment stands on
1,072 sq ft
24% of the room
Equipment plus clearance
4,067 sq ft
91% of the room

The last figure counts each piece's clearance on its own. It fits in the room because neighbours share it: one walkway between two rows of machines can serve as clearance for both. That sharing is what a layout decides, and why a room's area alone does not tell you how much it holds.
